10 Keys to a Successful Blog

OK I know I do NOT have a successful blog but I think I know why.  Here are the things which I obviously don't do that could make your blog successful.

1.  Post!  Post! and Post More! -- Post often.  Your readers will have you on your mind.

2.  Don't random post -- post with purpose and have a specific intent.   Do you have a makeup focus?  Are you in to College Football?    Do you like TV shows or other entertainment?    Keep your focus and while you can occasionally venture off topic, the majority of your topics should remain true to your audience.  If you're a miscellaneous writer your project is going to be a little more difficult.  Unless you have a major fan following.

Oh maybe I should have said -- if you have a hit TV show or movie - you probably can quit reading now.  Just get your twitter account verified and link to your blog. k? Your welcome!

Back on track with the rest of the population....

3.  Visit other people's blogs with the same interest and comment.  KEY: They have to have the same interest.  Don't just go comment and say "Hey check out my blog: www.yourblogaddresshere.com  That would be rude and no one with any brains would click the link.

4.  Use Social Media - You don't have to use EVERY social media outlet but use a few.  Twitter is a great one because you can use hashtags and follow people with the same interests as you.  You can have your twitter account automatically updated with your blog post title.  Also post to facebook.  Who better to be interested in YOU than your so called "friends".

5.   Use graphics and images in your posts!  We all digress as we get older and love to see supporting images.  If your blog is all text -- honestly -- its not aesthetically pleasing.

6.  Encourage others to subscribe to your RSS feed or offer an email subscription BUT don't use the entire post...only a short blurb to get your reader interseted that way they will visit your site.

7.  Hold off on the advertisers until you get established.

8.  Give stuff away!  If you have contests, polls etc offer a treat for the winner.

9.  Don't put a lot of noise or flash on your blog.  If people are afraid to read your blog from work or school...guess what -- half the time they could check out your content -- they won't.

10.  Have fun and be you.  Make your blog unique.  No one is like you -- and it would be really cool if your blog is a reflection of you.

Good luck and Happy Blogging!
